Sydney, October 18, 2023 – The Consulate General of Bangladesh in Sydney commemorated the 60th birth anniversary of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, observing ‘Sheikh Russel Day-2023’ with due reverence and honor. The event was gracefully attended by consulate officials and the vibrant community of Bangladeshi expatriates residing in Sydney, including the enthusiastic participation of children and adolescents from diverse age groups. The event highlighted and celebrated the life and enduring legacy of Sheikh Russel, who is dearly remembered as the beloved youngest son of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
In the early hours of the day, Consul General Mr. Md. Sakhawat Hossain, accompanied by the consulate staff, initiated the commemoration by presenting floral tributes to the portrait of Sheikh Russel, expressing profound respect to his cherished memory. A special prayer was offered extending heartfelt wishes for peace to the departed souls of Shaheed Sheikh Russel and the other martyred family members from the fateful incident of August 15, 1975. Prayers were also articulated, hoping for the perpetual peace and flourishing prosperity of the nation and its beloved citizens. Subsequently, the messages from the President and the Prime Minister were read out to the audience.
In the evening, an enriching discussion session as well as a delightful cultural program was organized to celebrate the birthday of Sheikh Russel. The program highlighted the life of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, along with a documentary on Russel. The Consul General took the opportunity to inspire the children and adolescents in attendance urging them to study the biography of Sheikh Russel and be inspired by his ideals. He mentioned that Sheikh Russel, despite his transient life, has secured an eternal place in everyone’s heart owing to his endearing humane qualities. Emphasizing the virtues of Bangabandhu and his family, he encouraged everyone present to embrace these ideals as a beacon for contributing meaningfully to the nation’s continuous development.
A vibrant cultural mosaic of songs, rhymes, dances, and poetic performances by children further elevated the atmosphere, expressing their deep admiration and affection for Sheikh Russel. Concluding the commemorative event on a note of shared joy and respect, Consul General Mr. Md. Sakhawat Hossain felicitated the enthusiastic participants with presents and led the cheerful cake-cutting ceremony.
